Electric Cars
Electric Car
is an automobile that is propelled by one or more
electric motors, using
electrical energy stored in
rechargeable batteries or another energy
storage device. Electric motors give electric cars instant torque,
creating strong and smooth acceleration. They are also around three times
as efficient as cars with an
internal combustion engine. They do not emit
tailpipe pollutants, giving a large reduction of local air pollution, and,
can give a significant reduction in total greenhouse gas and other
emissions. The first practical electric cars were produced in the
1880's.

Battery Electric Vehicle is a type of electric vehicle (EV) that uses
chemical energy stored in rechargeable battery packs. BEVs use electric
motors and motor controllers instead of internal combustion engines (ICEs)
for propulsion. They derive all power from battery packs and thus have no
internal combustion engine, fuel cell, or fuel tank. BEVs include
motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rail cars, watercraft,
forklifts, buses, trucks and cars.
Batteries (electrical energy storage)
Safer and more efficient EV batteries. Researchers have found a way to
improve all-solid-state lithium battery performance. The research team has
discovered that creating a porous ceramic membrane, instead of the
traditional dense plate, and filling it with a small amount of polymer can
resolve this issue.

Electric Car Sales Up 47% In 2017. Last
year, with 1,223,600 EVs sold globally, a 58 percent sales increase
was reached over 2016. China led the way for battery electric and
plug-in hybrid vehicle sales with a 73 percent growth surge last year.
However, that still only represented 1.3 percent of total global new
passenger vehicle sales last year. Apr 30, 2018.

In 2022, the Biden administration
last month approved plans from all 50 states to roll out a network of
high-speed chargers along interstate highways using $5 billion in federal
funding over the next five years. But states must wait to apply for an
additional $2.5 billion in local grants to fill in charging gaps,
including in dense urban areas. Nationwide, there are about 120,000 public
charging ports featuring Level 2 charging or above, and nearly 1.5 million
electric vehicles registered in the U.S. — a ratio of just over one
charger per 12 cars nationally, according to the latest U.S. Department of
Energy data. A briefing prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy last
year by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory forecasts a total of
just under 19 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030, with a
projected need for an extra 9.6 million charging stations. In Los Angeles,
for example, nearly one-quarter of all new vehicles registered in July
were plug-in. The city estimates in the next two decades, it must expand
its distribution capacity anywhere from 25% to 50%, with roughly
two-thirds of the increased demand coming from EVs, said Yamen Nanne,
manager of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's transportation
electrification program. In Los Angeles, the city has installed over 500
pole-mounted EV chargers — 450 on street lights and 50 on power poles —
and wants to add 200 more per year, Nanne said.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle
Electric Vehicles provide lower carbon emissions through additional
channels. A recent study from the Yale School of the Environment
published in Nature Communications, found that the total indirect
emissions from the supply of chain of electric vehicles pale in comparison
to the same indirect emissions from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

Regenerative Braking
Regenerative Brake
is an energy recovery mechanism which slows a vehicle or
object by converting its
kinetic energy
into a form which can be either used immediately or
stored until needed. This contrasts with conventional
braking systems, where the excess kinetic energy is
converted to unwanted and wasted heat by friction in the
brakes. In addition to improving the overall efficiency
of the vehicle, regeneration can greatly extend the life
of the braking system as its parts do not wear as quickly.

Kinetic Energy
Eddy Current Brake
is a device used to slow or stop a moving object by
dissipating its kinetic energy as heat. However, unlike
electro-mechanical brakes, in which the drag force used
to stop the moving object is provided by friction
between two surfaces pressed together, the drag force in
an eddy current brake is an electromagnetic force
between a magnet and a nearby conductive object in
relative motion, due to eddy currents induced in the
conductor through electromagnetic induction.
Hybrids
Plug in Hybrid (PHEV) is a hybrid electric vehicle that uses
rechargeable
batteries, or another energy storage device, that can be recharged by
plugging it in to an external source of electric power. A PHEV shares the
characteristics both of a conventional hybrid electric vehicle, having an
electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE), and of an
all-electric vehicle, having a plug to connect to the electrical grid.
Most PHEVs are passenger cars but there are also PHEV versions of
commercial vehicles and vans, utility trucks, buses, trains, motorcycles,
scooters, and military vehicles.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle is a type of hybrid vehicle and electric
vehicle that combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE)
system with an electric propulsion system (hybrid vehicle drivetrain). The
presence of the electric powertrain is intended to achieve either better
fuel economy than a conventional vehicle or better performance. There is a
variety of HEV types, and the degree to which each functions as an
electric vehicle (EV) also varies. The most common form of HEV is the
hybrid electric car, although hybrid electric trucks (pickups and
tractors) and buses also exist.
Online Electric Vehicle is an electric vehicle that
charges wirelessly while moving using
electromagnetic induction
(the wireless transfer of power through magnetic fields). It functions by
using a segmented "recharging" road that induces a current in "pick-up"
modules on the vehicle.

Compressed Air
Car is a compressed air vehicle that uses a motor powered by
compressed air. The car can be powered solely by air, or combined (as in a
hybrid electric vehicle) with gasoline, diesel, ethanol, or an electric
plant with regenerative braking. Compressed air cars are powered by motors
driven by compressed air, which is stored in a tank at high pressure such
as 31 MPa (4500 psi or 310 bar). Rather than driving engine pistons with
an ignited fuel-air mixture, compressed air cars use the expansion of
compressed air, in a similar manner to the expansion of steam in a steam
engine. There have been prototype cars since the 1920s, with compressed
air used in torpedo propulsion.

Personal Transporter is a class of compact, portable, electrically
powered electric vehicle for transporting an individual at speeds that
don't normally exceed 25 kilometres per hour (16 mph), which includes
electric skateboards, electric kick
scooters, self-balancing unicycles and Segways. Made possible by
recent advances in vehicle battery and motor-control technologies,
legislators are in the process of determining how these devices should be
classified, regulated and accommodated during a period of rapid
innovation. Excluded from this legal category are electric bicycles (that
are considered to be a type of bicycle), electric motorbikes and scooters
(that are treated as a type of scooter) and powered mobility aids with 3
or 4 wheels on which the rider sits (which fall within regulations
covering powered mobility scooters).
Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter by
Segway Inc. Invented by Dean Kamen and launched in 2001, PT is an
abbreviation for personal transporter, a term now used generally for small
electric portable transport devices. HT is an initialism for 'human
transporter'.

The Solar Train
was officially launched on 16 December 2017. Byron Bay Railroad Company
has restored an out of action heritage train for 100 seated passengers,
and is fully repairing three kilometers of railway line, is reinvigorating
and preserving an out of action rail corridor and providing an affordable
public transport solution for locals and visitors, for a little more than
$2 a ride. All at no cost to ratepayers, at no cost to government at
any level. The train will operate on energy from the sun, with a diesel
engine used solely as a back-up, and solar panels on the train and storage
shed will generate the equivalent amount of energy required to operate the
train daily, charging the on-board battery bank. Train can also plug in to
get renewable energy from the local grid. There is seating for people with
a disability and luggage room for bikes, prams and surfboards, carried
free of charge. Two carriage rail produce more solar energy per day than
is required to operate an hourly return service. With one full charge, the
train can make 12 to 15 trips.
